What would you say is an absolute must do marketing tactic if you want to have a successful presence on the internet? Just a few years ago the answer would have been to simply put up a website and hope for the best. Then we had the addition of blogs as the next logical progression of website marketing. Now the absolute must do marketing tactic of course is the use of social media websites to not only network but market your products, services or brand what ever that may be.
Social media websites or web2.0 which to me encompasses all aspects of the internet now a days. No longer is it enough to just have a website or just a blog or even an online identity at social media sites. Marketing on the internet has become a huge and intricate web of creating an entire online presence. The biggest and brightest sites have all online marketing cylinders working and in a lot of cases it takes a whole team of people to keep that all going.
You need to have a website then you need to have a blog to talk about your website. Then you have community forums and boards and emailing for communications or marketing campaigns. Then depending on what your all about you might have a need for an affiliate program or a pay-per-click advertising campaign to just get the word out. I mention all of these things because they all play into the importance of social media and the incredible power of the the networking that goes on at these sites.
The beauty of sites like Digg, Twitter, Stumble, MySpace, Facebook and LinkdIn are that all their services are free and they are all driven by the people in the community. With Digg or Stumble for example if you generate some original content from your blog or website and it gets the attention of just a few people at one of these sites. The flow of traffic that can come from that will be quick, immediate and sometime very large for some sites it can get too big and actually crash their sites. But that’s a whole other issue and a nice problem to have if you do. Social media sites are the latest piece of the online marketing puzzle that has really elevated the marketing game to a whole new level.
